After American threats failed to compel Iran and the resistance forces to back down from their resolve to deliver a severe and fitting response to the occupation entity’s crimes and attacks, and despite efforts to use mediators to warn of the dangers of confronting the entity and its Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu—who sought to involve Washington in a war on his side while the U.S. was actually amassing weapons and troops to support him, all while discussing the risks of entanglement—a sudden announcement emerged from the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar. They claimed that a draft agreement on Gaza had been completed, with only a few details left to finalise, and called for both Palestinian and Israeli sides to begin negotiations on August 15th to reach an understanding.
Regional sources monitoring the Gaza agreement developments observed that, while the statement was officially signed by Egypt and Qatar, it was fundamentally an American initiative.
They questioned whether this was a genuine proposal or merely a manoeuvre, noting that its timing—at the eleventh hour and coinciding with the anticipated dates for the Iranian and resistance response, as well as the planned start of negotiations in a week—suggests an attempt to buy time and undermine the response.
They argued that if the situation were truly as urgent as it seems, there would be no talk of negotiations starting in a week. Instead, there would be an immediate call for ongoing discussions from the next day, with mediators holding the obstructing party accountable for any failure to reach an agreement.
Who sets the timeline for negotiations that are slated to begin in a week when ongoing talks, which have already dragged on for ten months, could easily be extended for another ten?
The sources emphasised that Iran and the resistance forces have never linked their response to the negotiation process over Gaza, which remains contingent upon the readiness of the supporting fronts to cease their actions once an agreement is in place.
They have consistently maintained that only the resistance in Gaza is responsible for negotiating and announcing any agreement. The Resistance Axis fully supports any decision the Gaza resistance deems necessary to achieve its goals.
If those behind the statement are serious about reaching an agreement, they should present their draft directly to the resistance and heed their response. Previously, a similar offer was made to the resistance, which was rejected by Netanyahu, resulting in nothing but silence.
What has changed now? Netanyahu has launched a major assault on two capitals and has faced no repercussions. Instead, American forces have arrived to support him. An agreement could either be tailored to Netanyahu’s terms, placing blame on the resistance for any failure, or the process could repeat itself, with mediators returning to silence and merely buying time for Netanyahu while delaying or thwarting Iran and the resistance forces’ response.
Why should anyone believe that Washington will pressure Netanyahu and the entity’s leadership to accept terms that meet the resistance’s conditions, especially when those conditions were previously dismissed without any acknowledgment that the ball was in Netanyahu’s court? Instead, the resistance was constantly informed that the ball was in its court, while the so-called generous Israeli offer on the table was nothing more than a proposal tailored to the occupation’s own terms.
