The major events shaking Lebanon and the Arab world did not overshadow the news of President Salim Al-Hoss’s passing, the conscience of Lebanon and the Arab world.

He was an exemplary figure in embodying the role of a statesman, known for his humility and for rising above positions and material gains. Al-Hoss famously said, “A leader remains great until he asks for something for himself; then he diminishes”.

The late leader was a man of culture, intellect, and authorship, with unforgettable national and pan-Arab stances, always aligned with Palestine and the resistance.

He served as Prime Minister during the liberation of South Lebanon in 2000, alongside his governing partner, the resistant President General Emile Lahoud.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah began his speech, dedicated to discussing the historic response of the resistance to the occupying entity’s attacks on the capital and its suburbs, and the assassination of Commander Fouad Shukr, by mourning the late President as a significant loss to the resistance and Palestine.

While the world was preoccupied with following the resistance’s response, dubbed “Operation of the Fortieth” by Sayyed Nasrallah, he confirmed that the resistance fulfilled its promise.

Nasrallah explained that the qualitative response consisted of two parts: first, sending hundreds of rockets to dozens of occupation sites in northern occupied Palestine, reaching the borders of Acre and Tiberias; second, dispatching dozens of drones towards Tel Aviv, targeting a central military intelligence facility, known as Unit 8200, specialising in espionage and assassinations.

Nasrallah stated that the operation was executed with precision, and the airstrikes launched by the occupation on the south half an hour before the operation began did not affect any of the planned objectives, nor did they manage to disrupt any of its tools, thus negating the claim of a preemptive or preventive strike. Moreover, the numbers being circulated about the number of platforms targeted by the airstrikes and the talk of thousands of rockets allegedly aimed at Tel Aviv but intercepted are mere fabrications for a Hollywood-style illusion of victory.

What stood out was the unexpected defeatism among the leaders of the occupying entity, both political and military. The response offered them a golden opportunity to justify launching a war, something they had been threatening for eleven months. Yet, now they claim, “We do not want war, nor do we seek escalation”. The situation is now in Hezbollah’s hands – if they consider the matter resolved, things will return to normal. Observers noted this as a sign of the deterrent impact of Operation of the Fortieth, predicting that the operation and its aftermath will influence the negotiation process, as leaders in Tehran assert that the Iranian response is forthcoming, with the Yemenis likely to follow suit.

In Syria, President Dr. Bashar al-Assad, during the opening session of the newly elected People’s Assembly, expressed his solidarity with the resistance fighters in Palestine, Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen, describing them as “models, examples, and inspirations on the path to liberation, dignity, honor, and independence”. He also extended a salute to the occupied Golan, highlighting that its people “have offered valuable lessons and demonstrated that the lack of sovereignty over their land does not equate to the loss of national identity in their hearts”. He emphasised that true nationalism is not about outward appearances or claims but is deeply rooted in belonging, loyalty, and unwavering allegiance.
