According to a senior security official in the occupying entity who spoke to Israel’s Channel 12, the current situation hinges on two options: reaching an agreement in Gaza for a prisoner exchange and ceasefire, or facing the collapse of negotiations and a potential flare-up in the north with Lebanon. This statement is linked to two key events: the first was the revolutionary incident on the Jordanian-Palestinian border for the heroic operation of the martyred Maher al-Jazi, who shot three security guards at the border crossing after he got out of his truck; and second, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s comments to his government about the need to change the situation in the north, citing the failure to return displaced settlers despite the start of the school year.
Observers from Jordan trace the roots of al-Jazi’s heroic act to the growing anger in Jordan over the Palestinian situation. This frustration is fueled by the brutal actions of the occupying military, the unmatched bravery of the resistance, and the heroic steadfastness of the Palestinian people. Additionally, there is a pervasive sense of Arab helplessness in altering this painful reality. Al-Jazi hails from Ma’an, a region where the Palestinian cause has long resonated, particularly within the Hawitat tribe to which he belongs. This tribe has a storied history of fighting for Palestine, with figures like Sheikh Haroun Al-Jazi, who fought alongside the martyr Abdel Qader Al-Husseini in battles at Al-Qastal and Latrun, and Major General Mashour Al-Jazi, the commander of the 1968 Battle of Karameh, where the Jordanian army and Palestinian resistance achieved an unprecedented victory over the occupation forces.
The ripple effects of this incident continue to unfold, with the prospect of closing the borders posing a significant economic and political disaster for the occupying entity. With Yemen blocking the Red Sea, Jordanian truck convoys have become the only viable route for goods from the Far East to reach the entity. Covering the entire 360 km border would require reallocating military resources from operations in the West Bank, southern Lebanon, and Gaza.
Maher al-Jazi has put Jordan back on the map after it was trivialised post the Wadi Araba agreement. On the other side, Netanyahu only wants to portray his actions as Iran’s war on the occupying entity stating that “Iran’s strongest arm is Hezbollah in Lebanon”. He added, “I have instructed the Israeli military and all security forces to prepare for a change in the current situation. We cannot continue as we are. We are obligated to return all northern residents to their homes safely”.
